Chloe Star is unapologetic, unafraid, and keeping her fans entertained with a new track each month this year. This month, the proud queer and Indigenous alt-pop singer released “Emergency Contact,” a song about breaking the spell of a one-sided relationship.
I had the chance to interview Star about the story behind “Emergency Contact,” family, and her takes on modern dating.
MSM: According to your Instagram, you are releasing a new song every month. How did you choose “Emergency Contact” for March?
CHLOE STAR: I was just really excited to put this song out. I also feel like it's a great song that just goes with the vibe of March! The other songs I plan to release this summer and fall also fit those seasons. Releasing "Emergency Contact" right now just felt right.
The automated “mailbox full” message is played in the song a couple of times. Are you the type of person who leaves no message unread or has hundreds of unopened messages?
OOOOFFFFF. I really struggle with my phone, honestly. I currently have 569 unread messages. It terrifies me!
Where did the idea come from to do some of your promo for the song in the back of a moving truck? How was that experience?
The juxtaposition of not being someone's emergency contact while doing something where I should really have an emergency contact just felt funny, LOL. I had a lot of fun shooting that content! My sister and her boyfriend helped me out and really stuck through the experience with me! I was worried about getting in trouble or someone complaining because I was blasting "Emergency Contact" all through Beverly Hills, but I was able to get away with it somehow!
What was it like bringing the song to life with JP Clark?
Working with JP Clark is such a fun experience. I love his process, and we flow together so organically. I feel like he really understands my sound and the stories I want to get across, which makes everything just fall into place. We had a lot of fun writing and recording this record!
How did you finally break your own “Emergency Contact” cycle? What advice do you have for someone in a similar relationship situation?
Shift your energy, regain independence, keep yourself busy, hang out with friends, and realize that I am my emergency contact! It's important to surround yourself with people who bring light and positive vibes into your life.
What are your biggest pet peeves of modern dating (besides one-sided relationships)?
Inconsistent energy, emotional immaturity, and performative dating, as in making something look a certain way online.
What are the things you remember the most about growing up in Los Angeles and on your family’s reservation in San Bernardino?
Being with family constantly. I am grateful that I have such a big family and can rely on them. When I was a kid, we always rode dirt bikes and just messed around in the creeks!
What did it mean to you to perform at London Pride last July as an openly queer artist?
EVERYTHING. It meant the world to me!!! That is one of my favorite shows to this day. Being able to show up for my community and be authentically myself without judgment is an honor.
Out of all your 100+ tattoos, which one (or ones) is the most meaningful to you?
I have so many that have so many meanings, so it's really hard to pick! But my great-grandmother's name is probably one of my most meaningful tattoos. Something she taught me was to “always remember who you are and where you came from." That is something I live by every day.

Do you have any big plans (an album, tour, etc.) coming soon?
This year I am dropping a song a month! I am so excited to share lots of music and content! Currently I don’t have any shows planned, but I am really working on a tour for the end of the year!
