Don't get me wrong, metalcore and deathcore will always be my go-to music choice. Nothing beats a nice chunky breakdown and some vocals that sound like an animal getting sacrificed. But then again, a nice summer-time banger full of relatable lyrics, fun grooves, and drum fills that make you want to dance can hit the spot, too. Thankfully Broadside is here to scratch that itch with their brand new single "Warning Signs," and thank goodness for that because it has been on repeat all day (sorry to my neighbors).
Broadside, hailing from Richmond, VA, have been making waves in the music scene for the past decade with a sound that is all their own, combining pop-rock aspects while still having an underlying heaviness to it. This unique sound is something that makes "Warning Signs" truly a "Broadside" song. "Warning Signs" makes you want to dance like no one is watching but then you give the lyrics a listen and realize this relatable summer-time anthem is not all just fun and games. On the new single, vocalist Oliver Baxxter mentions:
"Warning Signs is a subtle confession—about craving someone toxic enough to ruin you, yet sweet enough to keep you begging for more."
Come on. We have all been in a situation like this: you find yourself so infatuated with a person that you ignore every red flag that is in your face. Even though the red flags are like a sign on the wall right in front of you, you will continue to overlook them. With lyrics like "The same high that gets me off / Will probably put me in my grave" and "Warning Signs like neon lights all over the wall / It's easier to act like I don't see them at all", this is the perfect song to leave you looking at yourself in the mirror while you reevaluate all your decisions. Yet, through all these depressing and gut-punching lyrics, it doesn't seem like the band is judging you. They're simply validating your emotions while giving you someone to relate to. Damn, talk about a masterclass musical ability and talent.
While we may never be able to tell what this means for the future of Broadside or be able to tell if future singles and releases will follow this formula, there is one thing for certain. That certainty is that the future is looking bright for Broadside as I am sure this release will continue to skyrocket them into the mainstream and make the band a household name.
