For a lot of people, the band Born of Osiris holds a special place in their heart. If you were a "djent" kid in high school during the 2010s, Born of Osiris was on constantly. They were one of the first bands that granted me a photo pass back in the beginning days of my photography journey (the photos still hold up, not going to lie), so when I found out the band's newest album, Through Shadows, was getting ready to be released on the 11th of July via Sumerian Records, I just had to do a review. Simply put, Born of Osiris still is THAT band.

Coming out at the same time as some other heavy hitters, like Veil of Maya, Oceano, and For All I Am, in the Chicago metal scene, Born of Osiris has constantly pushed the boundaries of the djent-progressive metal sound. If there was any denying it, Through Shadows truly showcases the talent of the band. Each and every song on the album effortlessly balances an almost delicate guitar solo with heavy and chunky riffs, as well as an incredible ability to make a guitar sound like a whole new instrument. Don't even get me started on the next-level drumming or remarkable vocal range. Take the title track, "Through Shadows," as it comes in at just over 5 minutes and contains nothing but the finest musical talent of the year. How many songs can you name that have that pristine metalcore breakdown that makes you want to throw down in the pit as it transitions beautifully into a jaw-dropping guitar solo? Mind you, this is all happening while you're hearing some of the most amazing vocal work of the year. Absolutely incredible and just a testament to the musical ability of the band.

Choosing a favorite song from the album is proving to be next to impossible, but if I had to choose, I would say "Activated ft. Spencer Chamberlain" is proving to be a favorite. It just gives the vibes of a good ol'-fashioned metalcore jam. Plus, the combination of that feature from Chamberlain and the jazz breakdown is just sending the song to the next level. No, I won't explain further. Listen to the song to see what I mean!

While I have no idea what the future holds for Born of Osiris, I am certain of one thing. This upcoming release will continue to skyrocket the band to a place never before seen, and Through Shadows is sure to become a fan favorite the moment it releases.

Tickets for the band's upcoming USA Tour with support from The Browning, VCTMS, AXTY, and Lost in Separation can be found here.
