Fluorescents Finishes June Tour on a High Note in Dallas

It’s been a while since I’ve been to a good club show, so when Fluorescents announced they were going to be coming to Dallas as part of their summer tour, I jumped on the opportunity. Dozens of fans packed into Three Links this Saturday to do just the same, and with opening performances by Felicity and Dallas locals Penny Bored, the energy was about to be through the roof.

Penny Bored started off the night and delivered a great opening performance. I have seen the band perform several times over the years, and I have to say this might’ve been their best show yet. After playing several catchy pop rock songs, they ended their set with a new track that leaned way more into the heavier, punk side of their sound, which I really enjoyed. Based on the loud cheers from the crowd, it’s safe to say that they enjoyed this new direction as well.

Next up was Florida-based rock band Felicity. This was my first time seeing the band and also hearing their music, and they made a phenomenal first impression. There was not a single dull moment of their performance. During their song “Emo Trash,” they brought out a trash can full of candy, and soon Three Links was filled with suckers and Jolly Ranchers flying in every direction. But that wasn’t the end of the antics; pretty soon their bassist announced that he had seen Charlie Sheen walking around Dallas earlier in the night. Immediately after that, a girl in a Charlie Sheen mask walked out on stage and started dancing with the band. You never knew what the band was going to do next, and that’s what made their set so exciting. I will definitely be seeing them again the next time they come through DFW.

After a great show from Felicity, it was time for Fluorescents to take the stage. I had the privilege of shooting the band’s previous show at Three Links almost a year ago to the date, and I knew I was in for a fun night. I was proven right almost immediately as the band kicked off the night with one of my favorite songs of theirs, “Take It Back.” The crowd started getting rowdier as the set went on, and soon the whole venue was jumping up and down along with the band members. Unfortunately, the AC in this venue is basically nonexistent in the summer, but that didn’t matter that night. Fans continued to dance and mosh despite the heat, which was really great to see. It almost felt like I was reliving my Warped Tour days.

After closing their set with “Roll the Dice,” both the band and the audience were surprised by two blasts of confetti from the Felicity members to celebrate the end of the summer tour. Fluorescents was joined by Felicity members and a girl in a Guy Fawkes mask and covered Fall Out Boy’s “Where Is Your Boy Tonight?,” marking a very memorable end to an already great night.

Fluorescents will continue their summer tour in July and August in select cities, along with a handful of shows sprinkled in throughout September. Fluorescents is one of the most talented up-and-coming bands I’ve seen in recent years, and I’m very excited to see what they will do in the future. I could not recommend seeing them live enough, and if they are coming through your city later this year, it is definitely a show you want to experience.
