On May 23, independent artist Greyson Zane released his third EP, Maverick, setting the stage with the title track of the same name. The single features musician, Saxl Rose, accompanying on the saxophone.
Greyson explains, "In my mind, it blends all of the genres on the record into one for this song. I wrote it about struggling to love myself, fighting through it, and never giving up."

After just one listen to this single, it is clear from the beginning that "Maverick" is a song written just as much for Greyson himself as it is for his audience. The title alone symbolizes the idea of non-conformity and individuality, both key concepts throughout the entire EP.
The tone of the song utilizes a heavy mixture of elements from different genres, including electronic, pop-punk, and alternative rock. Saxl Rose's saxophone work also adds a unique element to the instrumentals.
The single has a sort of cyclical theme to it that creates the sense of a never-ending battle to overcome adversity. This becomes evident in the contrast between the negative and positive verses.
The song opens with dark, negative imagery like "Criticize me// Tell me what I am// Just somebody to kick when on the ground// Condemn everything// About me too// Push me harder until I'm six feet down," and eventually starts to lighten up with lines like "Finally seeing light to get me through// Don't fuck this one up// I found myself now// Don't let history// Repeat itself". The song closes out with the chorus, again using dark imagery through phrases like "lost in the grey", "hear no sound", and "watch me fall away".
Greyson has explored and used as many musical elements as possible in order to create a unique and personal sound for a single that still blends perfectly with the other tracks on the EP.
On May 30, Greyson will also be playing the EP live in Orlando, Florida. You can get tickets here.
