Pride Month hit, and Kami Kehoe really said, "I'm gonna to give the gays everything they want" when she dropped her new single and music video “DIRTY” last week. I, for one, was incredibly excited for this one. Kami Kehoe has proven herself to be a very versatile artist over the past couple of years, combining a mixture of heavy-hitting rock bangers like "PSYCHO" along with tracks that carry a more emotional weight and show her vulnerable side, like “HEARTLESS.” She has also never shied away from a more sensual side to her music either, which she highlights perfectly in the new single.
While many of Kami’s songs have a very sensual essence to them, desire and lust take front and center with “DIRTY.” Everything from the song's lyrics to the dark instrumental to the steamy visuals in the music video really makes the new single stand out amongst the rest of her discography. Every song Kami releases has equal parts of edginess and sexiness, but “DIRTY” really turns everything up to eleven. The bass and the beat of the song are dark and trance-like during the chorus, which draws you in in the most mesmerizing way. The whole song gives off this dark, forbidden energy, which makes it all the more alluring, and the day it dropped, I had it playing on repeat for about an hour straight. The song is just too catchy and addicting not to.
The music video also matches the theme of the song perfectly. It’s raw, it’s carnal, and quite literally dirty, especially once the black goo makes its appearance. Throughout the video, Kami is shown to be surrounded and caressed by a large group of women. All of the actions taking place are overwhelming, but at the same time enthralling, and when you add the music on top of it, it almost feels hypnotic. And by the time the chorus hits its final climax, the lights begin to strobe, and everyone is completely covered in jet black goo.
“DIRTY” is not just another badass single; it is also a fantastic depiction of raw desire and how all-consuming it can feel. The fact that it dropped during Pride Month also makes it that much more fun. So, thank you for that, Kami! All the pop girlies can keep Hayley Kiyoko and Renee Rapp this month, but we alt-rock girls have Kami Kehoe, so therefore, I think we win haha. If you haven’t checked out “DIRTY” yet, you should definitely go give it a listen ASAP. It’s not one you will ever forget. And if you want to catch the song live, you’re in luck, because Kami will be touring the States with Breaking Benjamin and Chevelle later this fall. I know I will be attending my city's show myself and am very excited to hear “DIRTY” and the rest of Kami Kehoe’s set live for the first time.
