I can't believe I'm writing this, but Hannah Montana (well...Miley Cyrus) is back with new music! Nothing like some nostalgia to remind us that we're all getting older.
On March 24th, the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special was released to celebrate two decades of everyone's favorite pop star. The special was a beautiful trip down memory lane, but the best part was Miley's surprise performance of her new song at the end.
The solo performance of her song, "Younger You," was only accompanied by a video montage of scenes from the show. Despite bringing me to tears, I was already eagerly awaiting the new track's release. Fortunately, Miley didn't keep us waiting long when she released the song a few days later, on March 27th.
The first thing that needs to be recognized about this song is that it feels like it's written just as much for Miley and her younger self as it is for us. It is an ode to childhood for those of us who feel like we have grown up together.
There is a strange contradiction of comfort and overwhelming emotions that can be felt while listening. The fact that the song is written from the point of view of a younger self checking in on the adult version further drives the emotional connection.
Despite the song's simplicity, lyrics like "Do you still pray before bed// or are you worrying instead" and "I know you're busy with your job// but don't forget to call your mom// And dad too// he misses you" share glimpses into different stages in Miley's personal life. The chorus also shares a haunting message to listeners about growing older: "Somewhere along the way// we lost touch// We used to be so happy just because// I know you had to go eventually// But don't forget about me".
Hannah Montana was always more than just another teen pop star among the others. Miley's message has come through loud and clear: to celebrate ourselves in every stage of life. From me and many others, thank you for everything you've created, Miley!
