Recent Fearless Records signee, Minute After Midnight, has released a song that reveals the intrusive thoughts we’re all too afraid to reveal ourselves. As a Halloween treat, the song “Masochist” was released on October 31 and is the band’s first single with their new label. Despite only being signed not too long ago, Minute After Midnight (with frontman Derrick Ryan) made waves in the alt-rock world with the single “GHOST” in 2023, a massively popular track for the band that was even played on SiriusXM’s Octane station. Since then, they’ve released a string of singles, including “LIKE ME,” “NO,” “COME ALIVE,” and “FLAMES.”

“Masochist” details the relatability of self-sabotage that no one really wants to talk about as the heavy drums and versatile vocals distract us from the darkness of the song. As Ryan puts it, “It's a song that makes you smile while simultaneously breaks your heart,” and it shows people “the beauty in [his] self-destruction.” He sings about the different ways his mind puts him through pain to try to tell him he’s not good enough—and he’s got the scars to prove it. This is nothing new to Ryan, as he laments that he “always knew right from the start // I’d be my own worst enemy.”

While Minute After Midnight doesn’t have any upcoming shows announced (as of right now, but fingers crossed), they’re still riding the high of the song’s release. In the past, they’ve played with bands such as First to Eleven and Sleep Theory, who they opened for during night one of their two nights of sold-out shows at Growlers in Memphis last September.

However, the band is holding a contest going on now through November 30 for fans to win a black Fender guitar. More information and contest rules can be found here. (Please note: Music Scene Media and its staff are not associated with this contest in any way.)
