If you have never heard of Satura before, you are in for an absolute treat. The Iranian metalcore pioneers have just released their latest single, "Dicefall", which is a fascinating blend of nostalgic 2000's metalcore and modern metal.
Satura was formed in 2008 by Ashkan Safapour, and currently consists of vocalist and lyricist Hamoon Moradiyan, guitarists Ashkan Safapour and Shayan Bahiraie, bassist Ashkan Aghaee, keyboardist Ronnie Markarian and drummer Arshiya Safaraei. Since 2008, the band has released one full-length album (Resentment, 2013), an EP (Rotten Creation, 2017) and two singles, "Under My Skin" (2024) and their most recent, "Dicefall".
"Dicefall" is decorated with nostalgia-infused riffs, crushing drums and haunting melodies. The vocals are impeccable, the lyrics cut to your core and the overall composition is intriguing still despite the simplicity.
The song opens with a riff that truly transports you back to the 2000's within a very fitting atmospheric sound design, and the second the vocals enter you get the first hint of that modern metal sound that will soon blend into the rest of the track. The first verse is still very reminiscent of that old-school metalcore sound, however, the second verse switches things up a bit and brings the track forward if we consider it in a musical timeline. The chorus and the post-chorus rotate within the sonic landscapes of 2000's and 2010's metalcore and it's difficult to pinpoint where exactly they sound like one or the other. A really nice breakdown sits in the place of the bridge and the final chorus and post-chorus bring the track to an end. My only complaint would probably be that the track could use a more sophisticated outro.
In a nutshell, "Dicefall" sounds like an ode to classic metalcore brought into a modernized soundscape. It is definitely worth a listen, and I suggest you check it out for yourself! The single is available on all platforms.
