Grab your pink flip phone and get your nails done for Scene Queen’s new EP, METALICIOUS. Described as “chaotic recession pop, y2k-coded, metal madness” by the queen herself, METALICIOUS is made up of seven tracks for every stage of feminine rage (with a hairspray misting of traditional girly pop).
Scene Queen (real name Hannah Collins) is best known for songs like “Pink Rover,” “Pink Panther,” “Win Win,” and “Barbie & Ken,” the latter two being collabs with pop-punk band Set It Off. She also got people talking with her song “18+,” a dig at predators in the industry who target underage fans and get away with it. METALICIOUS is Scene Queen’s third EP, and it comes as she celebrates five years as part of the Hopeless Records roster.
METALICIOUS showcases Scene Queen’s duality as an artist, alternating between sparkly vocals and vicious low screams. The EP kicks off with “Pink Flip Phone,” a lively party song that brings it back to the 2000s and the age of technological simplicity, even encouraging listeners to make the song their ringtone in the lyrics. Meanwhile, “Shopaholic” has her unleashing financial vengeance on a cheating ex by getting a black card in his name and using it to buy an Escalade, a mansion, and some Louis Vuitton.
Similarly, in “Tracksuit,” Scene Queen hunts down a boyfriend who cheats on her with her best friend (and hunts the best friend as well) to the sound of a killer guitar riff. “Tracksuit” has been on my playlist since it was released as a single and will more than likely be making an appearance on my Spotify Wrapped. The cover art for the single also featured Scene Queen with her beloved dog Cheese, who can often be seen by her side. (Fun fact: the picture on the cover was taken by Kasey Karlson, lead singer of metalcore duo Deadlands.)
The title track, which was also recently released as a single, features deathcore band Left To Suffer and combines a club atmosphere with a high-energy metal concert—but girls’ night edition. It’s all about hitting the mosh and teasing your hair so high it reaches the heavens. It alternates between electronic pop and sick screams, redefining what a girls’ night out looks like for modern-day alt girlies.
Overall, METALICIOUS is like if Kesha had transitioned to metal in the height of her party girl days (which is meant as a very high compliment). And speaking of Kesha, Scene Queen recently lent her voice to Rock Sound’s Pop Sound album with a cover of “Your Love is My Drug.” Scene Queen’s cover stayed true to the original while adding a pop of rock. The album also featured covers from artists such as Bowling For Soup, South Arcade, Huddy, and more. While not available on streaming at the time of writing, the album is available for purchase on Rock Sound’s website as a CD with an accompanying issue of their print magazine.
In addition to her EP and the Kesha cover, Scene Queen is hitting the road with her headlining “METALICIOUS Tour,” announced back in June. The tour starts in just a few days in Atlanta, GA, on September 15, and ends on October 25 in Orlando, FL. Tickets can be found here.
