It's safe to say, Mod Sun is back in full force! Following the May release of his single, "Mirror," Mod didn't wait long to give fans exactly what they want...more music. On July 24th, we got his latest track, "2am," following some entertaining social media promotions.
In a release for the track, Mod explained,
“I wrote it about one of my first nights out when I fell in love with [Nashville]. I met a girl who dragged me around her favorite spots. We had the greatest time, but when the lights went on, she was gone, and I never saw her again.”
This track is officially at the top of my summer playlist. It's perfect for late-night drives with the windows down. The song has an overall sense of youth and freedom that takes any listener back to their heyday. From the build-up hype on social media to the accompanying visualizer, this song perfectly highlights Mod's comeback era and feels like the perfect refresh.
The instrumentals feel rather simple, highlighting Mod Sun's vocals. The vocals sample a combination of upbeat melodies with a style that feels closely related to other spoken word formats. Lyrically, Mod has brought the same raw personality to the track that fans recognize and love. Appropriately titled "2AM" (when inhibitions are usually at their lowest), the lyrics are a beautiful love letter to someone who's made a memorable impact on you, despite barely knowing them. The lyrics contrast inner self-struggle with infatuation with someone else.
The lyrics "I’m so pathetic // Tried to be funny but...she didn’t get it // Music’s never too loud, I want a headache // I’mma stop talking now… // I’m tryin’ hard to be cool // Yeah I want it, I want it, I want it // Do you want me too? // ‘Cause they ain’t got nothin on you" switch between the two points, putting listeners into the moment in time that Mod experienced, as his mind is racing.
"2AM" Visualizer
The accompanying visualizer enhances the song's story, staying with the simplicity and chaos that comes with 2AM adventures. Personally, that's exactly what this song is about...the story of a fleeting moment and the way in which it affects you. Every time I listen to this song, it takes me back to similar moments throughout my life because, let's be honest...we all have our own 2AM adventure memories.
