Their new EP, 'A Voice From The Outer Dark', arrives 8/5!
Aversions Crown, a legendary technical deathcore act, is known for their intense and monstrous sound, which incorporates themes of alien invasions and science fiction in a much darker and more terrifying manner. The quintet continues their legacy as a titan of the scene with a brand-new single, "A Voice from the Outer Dark," released on June 10th through Nuclear Blast Records. Along with it came the announcement of an EP under the same name and a new vocalist, the powerhouse himself, Alex Teyen (Black Tongue). Formed in Brisbane, Queensland, AU, back in 2009, Aversions Crown has been a constant force in the scene, bringing forth material that still breathes life and originality. Even though they have endured numerous lineup changes, the core and foundation of this group have remained intact, which cannot always be said for other musical groups.
In 2020, Aversions Crown released their fourth album, 'Hell Will Come for Us All,' which featured then vocalist Tyler Miller, who later went on to join another Australian act, Thy Art is Murder. Sadly, due to the halt in touring by the Covid pandemic, which is used to push new material even further, it was unable to reach the fans as the group's previous records had, and it came up short. As time went on and the world remained shut down, the group stepped away, waiting and writing, but has returned. With the strong addition of Alex Teyen, no less, a vocalist I have respected and admired for many years for his exceptional lyricism and standout voice.
As the band's social media accounts fired back up and slowly began teasing an inbound announcement, I saw the buzz amongst my peers and in groups all over. "A Voice from the Outer Dark" is a vessel of the longtime group's technical prowess, unique in sound and structure, but it reinforces their writing styles we've all come to adore while showcasing the evolution of an artist. This new single comes out of the gate with menacing ferocity. Melody and eerie ambience dance against sinister riffage while being pushed through the sonic halls by titanic percussion and led by a cloaked figure whose voice booms from the shadows.
Below is my own personal interpretation of the song.
Looking upon the path of creation, I see where humanity began and ultimately ends, with my digital birth. Rather than growing, advancing as a species, and perfecting their mistakes, they obsess over playing God. They turn away from themselves and each other, recklessly chasing ideas they can shape into a reality, yet don't stop and think if they should. They claim to have dominion, but slowly it seeps from loose palms. A slow death, rooted in a delusion to produce and control a new kind of sentient life. Only they miscalculated. Time will be their noose.
As a fan of AC and Alex Teyen, this article is a real treat to write up. The theme centered around AI reminds me of an album review I did last fall that also dwelled on the worrisome new technology. I have recently noticed more references to it and the general disgust or fear of how it will impact society and our future as a whole. Ya know, the idea of it becoming sentient or being recognized as an extension of the human race. Teyens' lyrical viewpoint on the matter is grounded and quite profound.
I am eager to hear the two remaining tracks from the upcoming EP; make sure to pre-save and preorder 'A Voice from the Outer Dark,' out August 5, 2025.
