On Sunday, November 9, Good Neighbours made their third stop in Phoenix in just over a year, this time in celebration of the release of their debut album, Blue Sky Mentality, released October 3. Supporting Good Neighbours on this run is singer-songwriter Nicky Youre.
Nicky Youre kicked off the night, bringing his feel good indie pop tunes to an already packed room. The singer-songwriter from Southern California, known widely for the massively successful 2021 hit “Sunroof,” recently released his debut album, What’s The Big Deal?. Youre charmed the audience with his warm personality and storytelling between songs. He introduced “Alibi” as a love song written about a girl he met on Hinge, a story that grabbed the audience’s attention. When he moved into the next song, a track about the same girl, he elaborated on that story, sharing that his Hinge fling turned into a relationship, and that she was actually on the tour selling their merch, a story ending that had the audience cheering. Although the audience was largely unfamiliar with the music, they danced along, vibing with the tunes, appearing to really enjoy the music. When he brought out “Sunroof,” the entire audience sang along as they threw their hands up in the air and grooved. Youre, backed by 4 musicians, played a tight set, which included an impressive solo by his best friend on the keys to wrap things up.

The rise of Good Neighbours has been nothing short of extraordinary. The British duo released their one and only song, “Home,” in January of 2024. That track went viral, amassing over a billion streams globally, earning platinum status in both the US and UK. In under two years since and with only a handful of songs under their belt, the duo has brought their music to venues worldwide, gracing the stages of festivals like Reading & Leeds, Austin City Limits, and Outside Lands, headlining tours, and opening up for artists like Mumford & Sons, Foster The People, and Benson Boone. The duo took time on the road to write and record, teasing and releasing tracks along the way that would eventually amount to their highly anticipated debut album, Blue Sky Mentality.
The rest of the sold-out crowd filtered into the venue as fans eagerly awaited Good Neighbours return to the Phoenix stage. The house lights dimmed and the stage illuminated as members of their backing band took the stage one at a time. The crowd went wild as Oli Fox and Scott Verrill sprinted onto the stage, launching into the catchy track “Suburbs.” The duo sounded just as good live as they do on the record, and had great stage presence. Fox worked the entire stage as he sang, danced, banged on a drum, and played the guitar, while Verrill moved effortlessly between a MIDI controller, guitar, and backing vocals. They connected well with the audience and kept everyone engaged as they took brief moments to interact with fans and tell stories between songs. The duo and their band radiated joy, smiling all throughout their performance, making it impossible for anyone in the room to not feel uplifted. Fans let go of all of their worries as they danced and sang along with all of the tracks.
The production, while simple, was effective, with lighting that varied between monochromatic and mixed to match the vibe of each song. The band kept the energy high as they made their way through the setlist, playing favorites like “Ripple,” “Starry Eyed,” and “found u/me.” The crowd was treated to nearly every track from the new record during the hour long set. The duo ended their set with their hit “Home,” before returning for an encore of “Daisies,” a track from their Good Neighbours EP. All in all, the duo put on a stellar performance. Although they did perform nearly all the songs in their catalog, I would have liked to have seen a few more songs make the setlist. The duo have put out a few covers of songs that I know fans would have loved to see live.
There is no doubt that big things are in store for Good Neighbours, and I can’t wait to see what they do next! The US leg of their tour finished out in Los Angeles on November 12. The duo will have a much earned break before hitting the road again just before the new year, this time taking the stages of Australia, the UK, and Europe. Be sure to catch them live next time they make their way through your city!
