Kacey Musgraves has made her musical return with the release of the new track, “Deeper Well.” Along with the new single, Musgraves is set to release her sixth studio album of the same name. The announcement came earlier this month after Musgraves shared an array of photos on Instagram. Combined, the photos seemed to create an album cover, leaving fans eager for more information. After her appearance at the 2024 Grammys, a promotional teaser was aired, directing everyone to visit Musgraves’ website. Musgraves later announced her new single would be releasing later that week and the album Deeper Well would be coming soon!

Deeper Well is Musgraves’ follow-up to Star-Crossed, an album inspired by the singer’s divorce a few years ago. After some time off, the songstress has decided it’s time for a new beginning; after all, when one thing ends, something else begins to bloom! “Deeper Well” is a folky country song laced with Musgraves’ dreamy vocals and meaningful lyrics. The track opens with Musgraves singing, “My Saturn has returned. When I turned twenty-seven, everything started to change.” If you’re an astrology geek, you may already know that one’s Saturn return is like a “coming of age” moment; in short, it’s when the planet returns to where it was when you were born. This happens a few times throughout a person’s life, the first time typically happening in someone’s late twenties. In an Instagram post promoting her new merch, Musgraves joked, “I survived my Saturn return, and all I got was this lousy shirt, oh, and a divorce.” Throughout the song, Musgraves sings about finding the deeper meaning of life while releasing all of the bad things and finding a new path. When speaking about her newest release, Musgraves stated, “Sometimes you reach a crossroads. Winds change direction. What you once felt drawn to doesn’t hold the same allure; you get blown off course but eventually find your footing and forage for new inspiration, new insight, and deeper love somewhere else.”

Overall, “Deeper Well” is the perfect example of outgrowing what’s no longer meant for you and learning to thrive elsewhere. Personally, this song and album could not have come at a more perfect time; as someone who is about to turn twenty-seven, I’m grateful I will have this music to lean on as I experience my own Saturn return, whatever that may entail. I’m looking forward to hearing more of Musgraves’ new music soon! You can listen to “Deeper Well,” available now on all streaming services. Check out Deeper Well, available on March 15th.
