Tempe, AZ, was treated to an impressive lineup of music on Tuesday evening, as The Band CAMINO brought their NeverAlways Tour to a sold out crowd at the Marquee Theatre. The band is touring in promotion of their new album, NeverAlways, which was released in July. On this evening, the lineup featured support from almost monday and ALINA

Opening up the night was 19-year-old singer-songwriter ALINA. The Nashville-based pop singer was joined on stage by her band and a backup singer, her older sister Gianna Adams, also a talented singer-songwriter, for an 8-song set starting with “look bad,” a single released earlier this year. ALINA wowed the crowd with her vocals and connected well with the audience, taking moments to explain the stories behind her songs and engage with fans. She continued on with “get a grip,” a song written about a friendship breakup, and “mercilessly,” her newest single released this month. She also treated the audience to a mashup of her song “second guessing” with The Cranberries’ “Linger.” For her last song, "don't be a stranger," ALINA taught the audience the lyrics to the chorus, and they understood the assignment, enthusiastically singing back the lyrics and ending the set on a high note.

The Marquee was packed wall to wall by the time indie trio almost monday burst onto the stage, bringing a headliner energy that had the audience hooked from the start. They had a strong fanbase represented within the crowd, singing along to every word of tracks like “can’t slow down,” “cough drops,” and “sunburn.” Frontman Dawson Daugherty brought an impressive energy to the stage, in constant motion, kicking, jumping, and karate chopping, all while keeping his vocals tight. Their 14-song setlist focused heavily on songs from their debut album, DIVE, released last year, along with songs from their earlier catalog, and their newest single, “lost,” released earlier this month. With each song, the audience’s cheers grew louder and louder. There is no doubt that they left the stage having significantly grown their fanbase. The band brought their headlining tour through Arizona’s Valley Bar, a much more intimate venue, earlier this year. It was clear from the audience's response to this performance that they can and should be headlining much larger venues. The future is bright for almost monday. Give them a listen and catch them live next time they make their way through your city.

After a stellar performance from almost monday, fans were ready for the main event. The vibes were high as the crowd sang along loudly to the band’s playlist, waiting for the lights to dim and for The Band CAMINO to take the stage. As the lights went down, the stage, which was outfitted with a large light display, was illuminated by alternating spotlights as “HasJustBegun,” the first track from the band’s newest album, NeverAlways, began to play. Spencer Stewart, Jeffery Jordan, and Garrison Burgess, along with their touring bassist, took the stage, immediately launching into “Daphne Blue,” a track often reserved for the encore that kicked the set off with a bang. The band would go on to perform an impressive 26-song setlist which spanned their entire discography and featured eight of the eleven tracks from their newest record along with all the favorites. Multi-instrumentalists Jordan and Steward showcased their talents not only on vocals and guitar, but also behind the keys, each taking a turn behind the piano. A choir of voices echoed around the room as fans sang along to songs like “I Think I Like You” and “2/14”- they even had all the words down to new tracks like “Stupid Questions” and “Baggy Jeans,” the latter of which Jordan noted has become their favorite to play from NeverAlways. Fans were also treated to an unreleased track, “Afterthought,” which the band has been teasing on social media for some time.

Mid-set, the lights went down as the crew set up for the band to take a seat center stage for a stripped down 3-song acoustic section, featuring “Damage,” “Hates Me Yet (222),” and a cover of Justin Bieber’s “DAISIES,” which was a perfect fit for Spencer Stewart’s vocals. The band picked things back up with “Karaoke,” which had fans waving their flashlights, as well as a deep cut fan favorite that they haven’t played in years, “Heaven.”  Following their performance of “Haunted,” the crowd’s raucous cheers would have been the equivalent of a standing ovation had they not already been on their feet, a moment that Jordan let soak in before expressing what a reaction like that meant to him. “That means a lot on a Friday or Saturday, but means even more on a day like a Tuesday.” The crowd’s enthusiasm continued as they sang along with fervor to the last two songs of the set, “1 Last Cigarette” and “See Through,” obvious crowd favorites. The band returned for a 2-song encore, which included their newest track “12:34” and my personal favorite, “What I Want,” which was accompanied by a fantastic strobing light show. Despite it being a late show, ending at 11:40PM on a Tuesday night, fans stayed until the very end, soaking up every last note as they wrapped up their performance.

The NeverAlways Tour is just getting started and is one fans won’t want to miss! Catch The Band CAMINO as they continue to make their way across North America, wrapping up the North American leg with a hometown show in Nashville on November 22. They’ll also be taking their show overseas, hitting the UK and Europe in December and Australia and New Zealand in February. Tickets can be purchased here.
