Singer-songwriter Lily Forte bridges generations with every note she sings. Her latest single, “Miles To Go,” is a timeless declaration of self-worth about walking away from toxicity and reclaiming your story. She’s turning pain into power and doing it all with vintage sophistication and retro glam.
MSM: “Miles To Go” feels really empowering — can you tell me about the emotional journey that inspired this song?
LILY: "Miles To Go" was inspired by a toxic boss of mine. My good friend and collaborator, Jamie Gelman, and I felt compelled to write a cheeky song about it!
You’ve described the track as a “goodbye to a toxic influence.” How did writing this song help you reclaim your own power?
I think making art about your experiences in any way helps you reclaim your power. The opportunity to tell your story through your own lens is special. I’m lucky to have the music, which in turn helps me find freedom to be completely myself.
The song also touches on the power imbalances in the entertainment industry. What has your experience been like a young female in the music industry?
My experience in the music industry has had its moments of chaos. I will let the song speak for itself in that capacity… The music industry must continue to lift up, and celebrate women. There is a certain knowledge and wisdom we possess. To any young woman reading this, no matter how young or old you are, know the importance you bring into a space. And, know when it is time to walk away.
You worked with two female directors on the project. How important is female collaboration to you, especially in a male-dominated industry?
There is a connection among women that can’t be replicated otherwise. Working alongside Marielle Boland and SJ Spreng for this project was an absolute dream.
How did the video concept come together?
This video was inspired by vintage Miller High Life advertisements. We wanted to lean into the painted imagery in those ads. One of the directors, SJ, painted the backdrops of the Hollywood sign and the blue sky. We had a mix of kitschy and vintage touches all throughout the video!
What was the most fun or unexpected moment that happened on set during the video shoot?
I have to say getting to sit behind the wheel of the vintage Impala was an absolute dream!!!
You’ve mentioned that “you have the power to write your own story.” What does that message mean to you now, at this stage in your career?
To me, that means keeping your head up high even when you feel the world is against you. Your story is your story, it doesn’t matter what someone else may think of it. Years ago, I wouldn’t have been as unwavering lyrically like I am in this song.
How do you hope “Miles To Go” will resonate with people who might still be finding their voice or leaving a toxic situation?
"Miles To Go" is supposed to be an homage to finding your voice, while still poking fun at the situation. I want people to listen to this song and feel like a bad b*tch.
What’s next on your bucket list — creatively or personally?
Creatively, I would love to make a project consisting of covers of all of my favorite classic rock tunes! Personally, I want to visit Europe within the next year. I have never been, so it's on the list for sure.
Your debut album is on the way in early 2026 — what can fans expect from this next era of Lily Forte?
Fans can expect more jazz and more blues from me. This album feels mystical. Be on the lookout for many references throughout the project <3
