Election night, 2026. The ballots have all been cast, and now the only thing left to do is sit here and watch as the numbers slowly roll in. Bad energy over the state of Indiana tonight, friends. All too likely it is that we're in for another two years of one-party control, of some voices being heard and others viciously repelled with clubs, truncheons, and any other blunt instruments found lying around the caverns these troglodytes keep crawling out of. What we need is distraction, shelter from the storm; what we need is a tune to drown out the static. Enter Fortunate Suns’ new single, “Everything You Need.”

Fortunate Suns is the hottest thing creeping around the Minnesota jam scene these days. These guys have been on a steady trip to the top ever since their debut EP “Last Train Out” dropped back in 2025. Since then, they've worked their way up from a steady flow of gigs in their local brewery circuit to playing the upcoming Big Turn Festival. “Everything You Need” is just the newest lunge forward for the Fortunate Suns, but it may be the best one yet.

Let's get one thing straight right off the bat: “Everything You Need” isn't just a new single; it's a jam. What I mean by that is that the song is over six and a half minutes of noodling riffs and wailing rhythms, which don't follow a strict path but meander about, seeing exactly how far the limits of one tune can be pushed. It’s an old-school psychedelic rock-inspired song; that’s psychedelic rock from back when it was hard rock, not modern psych, which is replete with synths and sound effects for the sake of the strange; here it’s all weeping guitars and pounding beats. It’s the kind of tune you would expect to hear blaring out of a crowded warehouse painted in Day-Glo and packed full of freaks turning on with a buffet of psychoactive compounds.

In the late 2020s, it is almost a statement to do a jam in this style. Over the course of the decade, we have seen funk slither its way back into the spotlight of the jam scene, being, at first, a neat trick pulled out occasionally to add another dimension to the jams we know and love, but since having gone far beyond that. Print out a list of the twenty most popular jam bands right now and chuck a dart at it; I guarantee you that whoever you hit is experimenting with funk-jam right now. It has taken over completely, becoming so intertwined with the genre that, at this point, the two are more or less one and the same. And so, I commend Fortunate Suns for staying true to themselves, and true to their jams, by writing the hard rock number we’ve been so sorely lacking in the jam scene as of late.

You can find “Everything You Need” streaming wherever you get your music now. I recommend sealing yourself up in whatever crypt it is that you take to hiding in when all signs are pointing towards doomsday and cranking this song up as loud as it goes until the trouble has passed. It will see you through the turbulence like no other. In the meantime, I better head back up topside; the numbers are still rolling in, and it seems, all of a sudden, a new wave may be sweeping the nation. Only time will tell.
