Olivia Rodrigo is back! Rodrigo just dropped her newest song, “vampire.” The track is the lead single from her upcoming second album, Guts, which will be released later this year.

The name might sound a little familiar… Rodrigo rose to fame in early 2021 after her debut single “Drivers License” went viral on TikTok and soared to the top of charts across the globe. She has since released a full-length album, Sour, and embarked on a tour across North America and Europe. Now in 2023, she is back with her highly-anticipated track, “vampire,” and proving that she is here to stay.

“vampire” opens with the singer’s soft, melodic vocals accompanied by piano as she describes looking back on an unsuccessful relationship. The hurt is clear in her voice as Rodrigo sings, “Six months of torture you sold as some forbidden paradise.” Rodrigo’s vocals begin to build, soaring through the chorus. The tempo picks up in the second verse as Rodrigo details the realization that the guy is “bad, bad news.” As we reach the second chorus, drums and guitar join the mix, making it an anthem you can’t help but sing along to. The crescendo arrives during the bridge and final chorus; it’ll have you jumping up and down as the emotions of the singer hit you full force. The song comes to a close with Rodrigo’s final accusation, singing “Bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire.”

If you’re a fan of Rodrigo’s previous work, I think you’ll enjoy the direction she’s heading in now. “vampire” feels like the perfect mix between “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U.” Rodrigo described the song in her interview with Billboard, referring to it as “her version of a rock opera,” claiming that it “honored her singer-songwriter roots.” I’m excited to see where she takes us with album two. If I were you, I’d stick around and check out Guts when it releases this coming September.
