Josh Doty is the vocalist of the band Cemetery Sun. They came together in 2013 and blend a catchy mix of “pop-punk, alt-rock, and electro-R&B”. The band is also comprised of Matt Scarpelli and Elliot Polokoff. You can check out the band’s latest album, “Ascension”, from Velocity Records on all streaming platforms, and on tour now with Stand Atlantic and With Confidence.
MSM: Tell me a little bit about your background. Where did your interest in music come from? Was it something that you always knew you wanted to pursue?
JOSH: The pursuit of music was something I found myself very attached to from a young age. I want to say I was only 10 or 11 when I really became engaged in wanting to learn guitar and write songs. A lot of it came from just watching music videos with friends. Everything seemed so far out of reach in comparison to how accessible music and artists have now become.
MSM: When fans recommend your band to others, what song do you hope they choose first?
JOSH: I always hope they’d choose songs like Chemical Warfare, IDNUA, or 19! Also because we play all of them live.
MSM: What has been your favorite tour so far, and why? Any particularly fun memories to share?
JOSH: My favorite tour to date is actually the one we’re currently on with Stand Atlantic. Everything is resonating so well and the tour package has been top notch!
MSM: What do you attribute most to your success?
JOSH: Our reluctance to give up! When things get hard for us, we lean into the music and the process that much harder and it always leads us back to where we wanted to go as a band and sometimes it’s somewhere even better.
MSM: What do you hope to achieve with creating music? Is there anything in particular that you want people to take away from your songs?
JOSH: I hope to achieve pride in what we do. And also opportunity to inspire and help others learn to do the same with whatever it is that drives them. Ultimately it’s the definition of happiness driven by what we’re passionate about.
MSM: Last, but certainly not least, do you have any closing messages for your fans?
JOSH: Come see us on tour! That’s what keeps the vision alive and well. If you can’t see us live then check us out on Spotify or whatever music streaming platform you have available to you!
